They had rented billboard spaces

in 12 major cities

around the world,

for the display of black-and-white posters

that declared

“WAR IS OVER! If You Want It

 – Happy Christmas from John & Yoko”.

*****

So this is Christmas

and what have you done?

Another year over,

a new one just began.

And so this is Christmas,

I hope you have fun,

The near and the dear one

The old and the young

A very merry Christmas

And a happy new year,

Let’s hope it’s a good one

Without any fear

And so this is Christmas

For weak and for strong,

For the rich and the poor ones,

The road is so long.

And so happy Christmas for black and for whites,

For the yellow and red ones,

Let’s stop all the fight.

A very merry Christmas

And a happy new year

Let’s hope it’s a good one

Without any fear

War is over

If you want it

War is over now

Happy Christmas!

“Lennon came up with the song as a way of continuing the themes of social unity and peaceful change via personal accountability, that was previously the basis of the earlier billboard campaign, while attempting to convey optimism and avoiding the sentimentality he felt often characterised Christmas music.”
